A nine-storey marble building, occupied by the Equitable Life Assurance Society and other great commercial corporations, was destroyed by fire. Three men were killed by leaping from the roof. 'Deputy Fire Chief Walsh is believed to be dead m the ruins. Tlie President of the State Deposit Company took refuge m the. vaults, and is unable to be released. The loss of property exceeds one million pounds sterling. Walsh Avas standing on the upper floor Avhen it crashed down. Other firemen clung to a AvindoAV ledge, and Aye re rescued. Walsh disappeared. The fire occurred m the heart of the financial district, of Wall Street, and brokers congregated m hundreds to watch the fire. Tt will be necessary to saw through iron bars before the rescuers can reach President Giblin m the vault.
