IS LABOR ORGANISING?
TALK OF GENERAL STHIKI
(From our Parliamentary' Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. A rumor which apparently had its genesis in the South went round the lobbies last evening, to the effect that labor is organising for a general strike on the eve of the election, with a view to consolidating the Labor forces, and thus ensure the return of candidates who are standing in tlie Labor interest, aud also to obtain full recognition of the rights of labor for the present and future. ; Questioned on the subject, a- representative member of the Labor party , said he had no information which bore out the rumor. As far as his knowledge went, labor was not in any way organised to the end suggested, and he did not think that any such move was in contemplation. He admitted, however, that there might be local strikes, perhaps among the coal . mines, for instance, but there was no general organisation directed towards a general strike. He went so far, however, as to admit the possibility of a general strikle taking place in the near future. The unions had not, he said, yet arrived at a general understanding on the subject, but there were signs that a. strike was going to come, and that was all he could say. The Prime Minister, questioned on the subject, said he had heard nothing of it. If there was such a movement in progress he would, he said, have been sure to have been- informed, but no information on the subject had reached him.
