(Special to Herald.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. At a general meeting of the Students Association of Cantemury College Mi L. S. Jennings was nominated unopposed as the candidate for the Rhodes' scholarship for the year. Mr Jennings career, both at school and at college, has been an exceptionally notable one, and he is probably the best fitted candidate for the position that lias been nominated from Canterbury College for. many years past. At Nelson College he was head^ of the school during his last year. For several years he was captain of the cricket, . eleven, and also captain of the Nelson representative team, aud a member of the football fifteen. He left Nelson m 1906, with a junior scholarship, to continue his studies at Canterbury College. At Canterbury College his* career had been equally brilliant. In games he has showed ••• up principally as a. tennis player. In his academic career, he is a ma v ster of science, with second class honors m mathematics, and a»s a. still further recommendation he .had been appointed locum tenenis to • Dy. . Chilton during the latter's absence m England. With a view to settling motor tyre troubles a gentleman has been working at an invention which he expects .will entirely do away with punctures and their attendant delays. The new idea is very simple, and consist, of a cork interior to the outer cover wrapped m canvas. It is claimed thabthe cork will have sufficient resisteney to preserve the cushion properties of the tyre, and will be light and non-puncturable. I,t is provided that the tyre shall be attached to the rim, which will have a, movable shoulder, by means of clamps. The invention has been shown to several motor experts m the city, but the inventor intends to proceed further with the idea before conducting any exhaustive tests. (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, last night. A woman named Grace Anne McTaggert, pleaded guilty at the Magistrate's Court to a charge of bigamy. She was first married m 1886, but her husband left her and she did not hear from him for 13 years, and considered she had a perfect right to marry Charles Ashby m 1906. She .was committed to the •Supreme Court for sentence. At a meeting of the Christchurch Anti -Militarist league arrangements were made for the distribution of peace and anti-militarist literature m the city electorate. The following motion was unanimously agreed to : "That this meeting tenders its most emphatic protest against the scandalous admissions of the Defence authorities concerning the prosecution of those who had not registered under the Defence Act, wherein it is intended to prosecute only m special cases, and is of opinion that such conduct is a deliberate prostitution of the people's ideals of equity and justice." CHRISTCHURCH, this day. The Canterbury Trades and Labor Council's Industrial exhibition will be opened at noon on the 26th, an official representative of the Government formally declaring the exhibition open. At a luncheon afterwards speeches will be given by prominent men m labor circles, presidents of Industrial and Employers' Associations and representatives of various religious denqminations. Very nuimerous entries have been received m the various competitions classes, and these promise to be a very important and interesting feature.
