Asphalt material m bulk has been ordered for repairing the deck of the Whataupoko bridge, and the 'work of ' filling m the numerous holes will be carried out this week. A feature m the Labor Day procession will be a practical washing day demonstration by Parnell, Limited, showing the latest No. 06 washing machine and the new patent folding clothes line at work. Mr Haughton, the manager of the ■Pathe Pictures, has made some successful experiments with his apparatus for photographing moving pictures. The photograph of the procession on Wednesday will be taken as the Post Office is being passed. ' Good progress is being made with the erection of the Milltown school, which will be ready for occupation after the Christmas holidays. The beautification of the grounds is already receiving the attention of the committee. Hedges are being planted, and the grounds generally put m order. Copies of a requisition asking for n poll to adopt the rating on unimproved ; value system m Gisborne are m circulation. If 15 per cent, of /the ratepayers sign the requisition, the Borough Council will then have to take steps to have a poll taken. A copy of the requisition has been left at the Herald office for signature. Mr John Colley has taken into partnership with him Mr Archibald Kirk, who has been the foreman for ten years past. The new firm will be styled John | Colley and Co. Ebctensive improvements ! have been made to the plant. A new 22 h.p. horizontal high-pressure engine and multitubvlar boiler ha,ve been put m, with head gear and everything else up to date, soas to facilitate the handling of the large shipments of timber that ; come to hand. All matters m connection with the yard have been overhauled, so as to give improved methods m coni nection with the firm's work. One of the Oook County Council employes at Waingake, named Thomas Ryan, met with a> serious accident on Saturday. . He - was driving a gig near Emerald . Hills, when one of the shafts, broke frightening tho . horse, which bolted. The vehicle struck a telephone post, and the occupant was thrown with considerable force over an embankment. The horse was eventually stopped by Mr 'Parker. He drove back and found Ryan m an unconscious condition, and badly cut and bruised about the head. The unfortunate man was brought m to the hospital last evening. He was reported to-day to ' be gradually regaining consciousness. : The death of Mr J. A. Perry oh Friday night occurred with tragic suddenness. He had been quietly seated chatting with Mr Tulloch after tea, when, without any warning, he closed his eyes and fell backwards. He was caught .before he reached the floor, but expired within a few minutes 1 . A critical illness which he had experienced fouoor • five weeks previously had left him very weak. His death was greatly lamented by everyone who knew him. He had been a resident of Tokomaru for 14 years, and had won the esteem and kindly regard of everyone with whom he had come m contact. •■ He leaves a widow (daughter of Colonel Porter) and five children to mourn their loss. The funeral took place at Tokomaru Bay v yesterday, and was the largest ever seen there. The body had to be conveyed for 1 nine miles to the" road. Many wreaths » were sent By sympathising friends, including tributes from the teachers and committee, and from' the '.school children. He had been a member of , the school committee for a number of years, and his work m connection with that body had, been much appreciated. The burial service was impressively conducted by the Rev.
