AUCKLAND HARBOR.

DEEP-WATER BERTHAGE NEEDED. (Per Press Association.,) ''■■'" AUCKLAND, this day. • The need for providing deep-water berthage at Auckland was urged on the Harbor Board m a letter read at yesterday's meeting, from Messrs L. D. Nathan arid Qh It was pointed out that arrangements were lately made for the Tainui to visit Auckland for homeward cargo, and to sail for London direct on the 11th tost. On July 14 the firm communicated M*ith the harbormaster, and lie said the Tainui could depend upon getting the use of a berth M-ith 29ft at low water spring tide. It was assumed at.? the time that this would suffice, and all -arrangements were made. Notices Svere issued to shippers, and cargo arrangements .made. Subsequently it was found that cargo of a heavy nature offering m the South Island Mould put tlie Tainui fiirthef -down jn the water than was . anticipated, mid last Friday a telegram was received stating that m consequence of the heavy cargo the vessel would draw 30ift before -finishing. Captain Moffat' M-ould not risk the boat at Auckland, and therefore the visit to this port would have to be abandoned, as there was no time to return to Wel** lirtgton 1 afterwards to ' nflish. \ ' Messrs Nathan and Co. further .stated that they had to cancel all arrangements., aiid notify shippers that, they could not depend upon the Tainui as an opportunity for shipment? "We feel sure," the letter proceeded, "the Boai'd will share w;ith us the wish . that Auckland should as ; frequently as possible be made the final port of departure for steamers, particularly tliose engaged m the mail and passenger service, and it M-ould appear that arrangements for the larger steamers cannot be made M-ith any degree of confidence or certainty until the port can offer berths suitable fot . these vessels M'hen deeply laden." Mr Bradney considered the absence of deeper berthage was a reflection on the Board. The matter was referred to the Works Committee. • <— — ■— a * ■
