A LICENSING CASE.
'(Special to Herald.) NAPIER, this day. George Searle, licensee of the Clarendon, hotel, Avas before the Licensing Committee yesterday to show cause why his license should not be cancelled. The police eA'idence. sought . to slioav that dearie had drunldtb excess, and Avas incapable of properly conducting the business of the hotel. Searle, hoAvever, denied that he had eA*er been the Avorse for liquor, or that he had been unable 1 to look after the business. After a -short the chairriian announced, tliat. the committee Avere, of opinion that betAveen the 10th and 18th December the [licensee [was openly and, repeatedly -(drunk, but to forfeit. 'tlie? license Avould ■be too great a punishment, as he would 'lose £1800, and they had decided to adjourn the matter until next annual: meeting.
