LICENSING COMMITTEE.
QUARTERLY MEETING
The quarterly meeting of the Gis-: borne Licensing Committee was held al noon to-day. Present; Messrs W. A. Barton, S.M. (chairman), D 7 Hepburn A. Dewing, and M. McLeod. REPORTS^ Sergt. Hutton, officer m charge of the Gisborne: police district, reported :— '*l respectfully report that during the past quarter the hotels • m this sub-district liaye, b.eeh well conducted and no complaints have been > niade.. 'l have inspected each of. the hotels separately and found them, 'clean. and tidy; both Vithin and . without, ..and7the;iup'keep all that could be 'desired. * There has been a considerable decrease m drunkenness quarter when compared with the corres^ ponding period of last year." Const. G. F. Bevan, of Wairoa, repprted that, negotiations were m operation for the purchase of the Clyde hotel by .Mr .Gardiner. In. a further report. Const. Beva-fi said several persons . had j spoken to him about the bad table that it was alleged -was kept at the Mohaka hotel' arid he thought the licensee should make -some effort to keep a, better one.. He had /noticed drunken m'on' about the hotel, which' shovved want of care. " Apparently anyobe served m the bar> and he' noticed Maoris arid various perßohs helping themselves arid others to drinks. He ; thought the-house was run m a most slip-shod fashion. . \ ' ,
Regarding the Mohaka hotel, Mr.F. W. Nolan said most of the allegatioiis were merely hearsay. He had numerous letters from residents m that district which showed that the- hotel was. -(veil conducted. — The Chairman said the committee was unable to decide anything at the present, but if the report was substantiated by evidence at the annual meeting, the committee riiight possibly refuse to renew the license.
The following transfers were granted : George Brown Oman, Wairoa hote], to John Dickson (Mr F. W. Nolan) ; Andrew Tuohy, RoyabOak hotel, to Arthur Frederick .Saunders (Mr F. W. No'lnn). The adjourned application of Leonard Storey (Clyde , hotel) for -a renewal of license was again called on> when Mr F. W. Nolan stated that the cause of trouble had been removed. — Tho application was granted.
Leave of absence for one month from February 23 \Vna granted to Reginald S. Cuulton, Record Reign ho,tel„ Leave of absence was also grunted to F; Harris, Albion hotel. •. . ,y, ",' '
