WESTPORT MURDER TRIAL.

(Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH. this day. The trial of Connelly for the Westport murder was continued yesterday. Dr Kimppon m cross-examination., said that two of Burkes wounds could have been caused by a knife, but the wound oni the cheek by a blunt instrument. Detective Mcllveney gave evidence regarding the. statements made to him by ConneHy. He stated that Murray's evidence that he (witness) misread Murray's statement regarding Connelly's Hokitika confession was absolutely untrue. The Judge was of opinion that Detective Mcllveney should have taken question and answer. In reply, Mr Stringer, Crown Prosecutor, stated that Connelly's statement, *"I alone killed Burke," had been made m reply to Mcllveney's question, "What is it you now say?" and Connelly's statement, "Hallinen and Anderson are innocent men," was Connelly's own remark. • This closed the Crown's case, other witnesses for the Crown being required for rebuttal. Mr Han lon briefly addressed the jury for the defence. He laid stress on the fact that much of the prosecution's evidence pointed to Hallinen and Anderson as the perpetrators. He called Miss Harcourt, barmiid at Lennie's hotel, who saw blood stains on Hallinen's clothes before the row adjoining the fish shop, arid Bull arid Lennie, who also 6aw stains.
