Mr Deakin, in a statement to. the House, asked that other business stand aside to make way for the Tariff. He thought the first task incumbent on the House was to deal with the Tariff. Government could not subordinate this question at present to anv other, however important- it might be. He proposed to proceed with the tariff next VVednesday. He moved that other ques. tions on the business paper, including Mr Webster's motion and the Capital Sites Bill, be postponed till the Tariff becomes law. A warm debate ensued, during which Messrs Reid and Joseph Cook attacked Mr Deakin over Mr Webster's motion incident. Mr Deakin replied that he. was willing to accept a challenge from tive Opposition at any time, ihe motion to place the Tariff at the head of the business paper was carried, and the He use adjourned Lo Wednesday.
