PRESBYTERIAN ASSEMBLY.
(Per Press Association.)
WELLINGTON, this day. At the Presbyterian Assembly to-day, the report of the Church Extensidn Committee was read. It stated that owing chiefly to the original character of the settlement of Otago and Southland, the commendable design of its founders in making provision for planting ' churches and schools, and the affinity in race and religion of a large proportion of its .peoSle, the Church there had been in less ifficulty in keeping pace with the growth. of population than in the other provinces ot the Dominion. It would be a grievous mistake, however,' to "imagine that her efforts had been' equal to, hey opportunities, and that she.had.ho,shortcoming to deplore. The' report also" referred to, the privations and religious disabilities of settlers in tlie "reiriote parts of the country. A resolution was passed, expressing gratitude for" the •progress, made, urging a^ new opportunity, b^ graiited'to the' Ciiui'ch in toe early stages of. national life of preventing evils that have grown to be a scandal in oldeF lands, and commending the entire, work, alike, in crowded . centres and sparsely;, peopled.districts to the prayern and, liberality' of the whole Church.
