The thermit welding process, as applied to marine work, was tried for the first time at Lyttelton last week in conI nection with the repairs to the Kapiti, I anq proved entirely successful. The jjob! a somewhat large one, says the Pressj that of welding a new rudder s on to the remaining section of the rudder post in place of the . one carried away when the vessel collided with the Patea breakwater recently; and was carried out by the contractors, Messrs Waddell and Sons, to the complete satisfaction of •.the chief engineer. The preparations occupied a day. and a half, but the actual welding was effected in a few seconds.. The contractors have now in hand the work of repairing the fractured stem post of the vessel, and that job will also be effected by the same process. At the present time (says a contemporary) Hastings appears to be the most thriving inland . town in New Zealand. The place seems to halve suddenly overgrown itself. Side by side with unpretentious wooden shops, which did duty during some of the Dominion's most dismal periods, are the foaundntions and walls of ferro-concrete business places, which are soon to be reared stories high, overlooking the willow metropolis. The biggest hotel in Hastings has 162 rooms, and is not yet finished.- The ferro-con-crete and brick buildings now in course of erection run into over £80,000. An estimate has been prepared for thc erection of an Opera House and Arcade, to cost another £80.000. Several business men. who have made their monev during tho past few years, intend to erect substantial warehouses and factories, which will cost thousands of pounds. Some time ago, a quarter of an acre of land, a corner section, was sold to a South 'Island' firm for £1000," and owners are asking £100 an acre for land two miles away from the post-office. Two years ago "a- land agent went through New. Zealand, and decided to 'camp in Hastings. To-day he is worth a fortune.. There has been a boom in town properties "and tliis is likely to continue into the country farms. The Hastings man has a dream of a harbor «\t Kidnappers, and, if this dream can only become a reality, he has no doubt' whatever of very _?oon settling for ever Palmerston Nortn's pretensions to become the fifth city of the Dominion.
