NAPIER NEWS.
. (Special to. Herald.) . NAPIER, thi9 day. The staff of the Hawke's Bay Herald celebrated :; the jubilee of the paper on Saturday evening oy a social, at which the Mayor and leading townsmen were present. During the evening the managing director, Mr Peter Dinwiddie, was presented with, a silver tea service and illuminated address, making eulogistic reference to his long and honorably connection with the paper. The- Customs duties collected here con-, tinue to show a steady increase". The total amount collected during the quarter ended to-day was £27,950, as against £26,637- in the corresponding quarter of last year. . '■'- , , , Mr Justice Buttbn yesterday .gave a ra.ther important decision re solicitors' costs in the Makbtuku divorce suit, Adair y. Adair and Gill. His Honor held that in order to entitle the wife's solicitor to costs, he should have reasonable grounds for >believeing there avos a good defence, but in the present adtiori, he (His- Honor) could not say tKere were' such reasonable grounds. " The fact^.in the iiands of the solicitor were sufficient to have put him on his guard. He. could not, therefore, order the petitioning husband to pay his wife's costs. . ; ■ ■ The Gas Company have lately installed, at considerable expense, a very complete electric lighting plant, but there seems some doirbt as to whether they will be abie to moke full use* of it by law. They must obtain the permission of the Government to carry the Svires across the streete, and as the Borough Council are calling tenders for electric lighting and trams combined, it is quite on the cards that permission will "be refused the Gas Company, who in that eye.ntwillbe confined to the block in which the plant is laid down. ..
