A FOOTBALL EPISODE.

TROUBLE OVER KENYON. (Special to Herald.) NAPIEiR, this day. I The football season of 1907 was closed on Saturday^ with an incident of a discreditable nature, and one that has given rise to considerable; feeling. It will be remembered- that on 'the previous Saturday the Rovers (Hastings) ibeat Scinde (Napier) in the final for the Rugby Union championship, but on appeal, the match was awarded to Scinde, the Rovers liaving played Kenyori, although warned that he was ineligible. Last Saturday the Rovers were down to play Scinde for the district challenge shield and fifteen gold trophies, but before coming into' town they rang up the Union secretary and enquired whether Kenyon" would be allowed to play. r Tlie secretary injudiciously stated that the Union would offer n6 objection; provided Scinde diet riot, and accordingly the Rovers came in. Ori arrival on the ground, however, it was found that several members of the M&nagement Com- j mittee of the Rugby Uniori strongly objected to Kenyon l>eing allbwed to play. A hurried meeting of the comtnittee was called, and by five to: three it Vas resolved to uphold the secretary's action, prinr cipally because the cfowd and players were there, and it was considered wrong to break' faitli with them./ • The start of the match was delayed -half an hour by this wrangling. The game proved a dingdong go, and jwheri time was called eacn side had scored six points, made ' up, strangely, by four goals kicked from penalty kicks. The three dissenting members of the dommittee have handed in their resignations as a, protest against the attitude taken lip,, and the Mariage.ment Coriimittee are roundly condemned by the public for receding irom a strong position.
