The Tuatea leaves' the wharf at 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. V The Union Co.'s s.s. Waikare returns from Auckland on-Sunday afternoon, and proceeds to Southern ports during ' the evening. The Union Coy's s.s. Squall leaves Auckland to-morrbw night for Tolaga Bay, Gisborne and Napier. . : The Union Coy/s s.s. Haupiri worked Te Araroa and Port Awanui yesterday, and Tuparoa to-day, and is due here on Sunday. The steamer Needles, which arrived at Melbourne a couple of weeks ago from Vancouver direct, carried a cargo of timber estimated at 3,300,000 feet. Not only were her holds full, but the timber was piled up on d_ck to a. height of .eight feet, giving the vessel a peculiar appearance. She met -heavy weather three days out, but escaped without damage. The first steamer, Bia, of the new Swed-ish-Australian Line, is now discharging timber from various Scandinavian ports at Melbourne. The vessels of -this line were specially built for the carriage of timber, as well as other goods, and- they have peculiar facilities for tlie' handling of all timbers, viz., side ports, which enable tlie timber to be passed from the covered lighters which are so much used m Scandinavia, instead of the old method of slinging it from the lighter, and then hauling it up the ship's side into the.vessel. By this manner of passing the timber m, all breakages are obviated.
