TRAMWAY ACCIDENT.
FATALITY AT WELLINGTON.
. (Per Press Association.) , WELLINGTON, last night A serious accident occurred on the Brooklyn section of the city tramways thia evening, re_ulting m the death of Mrs Bell, Jof Murchison, and the infliction of injjurieis on her husband, Mr Thos. Bell, the motorman, John' Rae, and the conductor, j Arthur Peftins. The Brooklyn line lejives Upper Willis street at the foot of Niltkn street, und proceeds over a sharp incline to the suburban area on the hill-top southward of the city. While descending this incline, one of the new palace cars! left the tract at a point near the Nairn street plantation, and after travelling About 16 yard., the under-car-riage was tipped off, and the car toppled over an enibankment, which at this point is about BJft m Mrs Bell is supnosed froni the nature of her injuries to have been killed ootrightj but it was over an hot. before her body could be taken from undei* the car. which is of great weight, and could only be shifted by the use of powerful jacks. Her husband was slightly injured, and was removed to a neighboring house. Rae and Perkins were taken to the hospital, suffering from cuts and contusions. Mt and Mrs Bell . were on a holiday, and were returning to their home from Clirißtcliftrch and other places in' t\\e South. They had taken a trip m the car to view the citjr from Brooklyn 1 eights. For some time- after the Brook|yu section was opened for traffic, the;; City Council only had a permit to run fwhat are known as box cars— the lightest cars on the city tracks— up this incline!, and only 24 people wero al- ** fowed to ifide each trip: The traffic, however, increased so muoh that the Public Works Department lately. aftflV making tesls, gave a permit for heavier cars tb be run on the section. The palace cars, oiie of which came to grief, each seat 60 passengers. How the mishap occurred is riot known, but it is supposed that the cqr ran away from the bralces.
