JEWS WANT EXTENSIVE TERRITORY IN AUSTRALIA.

(Received May 4, 10.5 a.m.) MELBOURNE, May 4. i Mr Alexander Marks, who ib ende<»V*" vouring to secure territory m Australia for the purpose of founding a Jewish colony, h%s received a somewhat remarkable letter from Mr Israel Zangwill. It was m reply to one from Mr Marks, stating thkt any Tbrm of independence was quite out of the question for a Jewish settlement m Australia, but that under Australian laws a large amount of local autonomy would be possible. Mr Zangwill's letter says: "We are quite satisfied with local autonomy. What we really want is elbow room. We do not desire to solve the problem for a few thousands, but to build up a possible future for a whole people. I am quite aware that Australia will fight hard against giving away any territory or fostering our aims m any way; but Aua'.ralia has to chose between a black population and a Jewish white one. Australia is Waking up to her folly, and her possible ftnture collapse. The Jews could possibly safeguard her future ns a white territory \ thus we are m a position to dictate our own terms, The great mistake of the Jewish people has always been to let other people profit by their pioneer labor. I am convinced that the present dog-in-the-manger attitude must pass away. What will help it to pass away will be that the Jew takes a strong manly attitude and refuses to be further exploited foi: any political advantage. He must value the bargain so that after he has developed the country he is not turned round upon as a parasite and bloodsucker. The definition of the territory mu6t be his by public recognition. With a land sufilciently healthy and sufficiently large I ahould have no fear of the rest. The gain to Australia would be no less than the gain to our own people. We want no hypocritical piety nor tolerance, but a fail* bargain, profitable to both. Our utmost hope would be that m the far future there should be a Jewish province m Australia, perhaps a Jewish State as not the least valuable member of the Australian Federation. "
