VOLCANIC ACTIVITY.
(Per Press Association.) TAIHAPE. this day. A gentleman who has arrived at Taihape from Tokanu states that the hot springs at Tokanu are intensely active m the early morning. Thousands of small jets of dry steam have been seen rising on the western side of the high ground at Tokanu. The existence of these was previously known, but they are more active. Ruapehu, tf snow-clad mountain all the year round, as setn from- tlie base, gave the impression that similar jets of steam had burst all round the summit, causing the snow to melt, aud giving tho appear, ance of an eruption, and for some days Ngaruhoe had been emitting large volumes of black sulphurous- smoke, like in appear, ance to a thick cloud caused by a thunderstorm. He considers the reports published are' greatly exaggerated.
