AUCKLAND, this day. I understand the Sha w, Savill Co. have secured the contract for Carrying water pipes and material from London to Gisborne. Professor Easterfield's analv6i6 of Taranaki petroleum shows the following : Dis. dilation test, benzine 20 per cent., burn, ing oil 40, lubricating oil 37, pitch 2, loss 1 per cent., total 100 per cent. Crude benzine, re-distilled, yielded 66 per cent, of naphtha. The kerosene is of greater density than wliite rose oil, and shows a greater tendency to smoko when burned m American lamps. This defect is also shown m Russian kerosenes, but it is largely overcome by the practical manufacturer. The heavy oil is a good lubricant. Mr Fair, manager of the Company, m reporting, say 6: "At present the 'birthday well' ig a payable one. From past experience I should say the life of this well is probably ten or twelve years,, hut it will not necessarily be a flowing well the whole of that period. WELLINGTON, this day.
