PLOUGHING BY COMPASS.
Captain Sycaftioro, ,who sailed Sir Thomas Lipton's yacht Shamrock m the races for the America Cup, is a man of ideas, and. is ever ready to back his opinions. An instance of this' occurred at some ploughing matches at Brightlinusea, Essexlj recently, when the captain was challenged to draw a furrow with Mr Reginald Girling, a Well-known Briehtlingtjea farmer. The role of ploughman was, as far aB land is ' concerned, entirely new to the captain, whose forte is ploughing the ' sea, but .there was a charm of novelty m the attempt, and he accepted the challenge^ Used to steering by compass, Captain SYcamore decided to continue its use. He accordingly fastened one to the plough, and the horses wore started. It was an oxcitirtg time, and few expected to see the gallant sailor beat the. farmeiil He steered his plough and ' guided his team straight as the needle' to the pole. His adversary made a gaL lant attempt with wrist and eye to beat him, but the judge, Mr J. Brown, easily placed CJaptain Sycamore the winner. His furrow was drawn with scarcely a> variation, land the fact that a green hand, by the aid of a compass, could beat a professional at the plough, must revolutionise ploughing., Ploughmen in> future majjt be expected to box tho com- , pass, and pass. a Board of Trade examination. + \fter the match of the day , other contests took place between farmers and ploughmen, the variations m; straightnesb being fnami 21 to 11 iucbosy showing the captain? fa? work to. be of the highest order of merifc-- Tribune,
