Hundreds of buildings m Chicago are , sinking sldwly, as the result of the subsidence m! the earth above a tramway known as' |the Illinois Tunnel. This subway is about thirty feet below the surface, and as the intervening layer of earth is for the greater part mud, building experts aro deeply concorned for the stability of a large portion of the business district. 'The Marshall Field building has been sinking steadily for months, and the glass m many windows has been shattered. The pullman 'Cai\ Company's great palace ?b tracked from root to foundatons.
Even the street railway lines are affected. A section of the overhead line is seriously twisted, owing to, the sinking of ma^iy of the supporting pillars. There' Jare noticeable depressions at twelve different street intersections. ■ It is feared that the strain on the great skyscrapers may cause their steel frames to collapse suddenly.
