THE STORY OF A LONG CHASE

Mr Lusau Blooniiield, of Auckland, while travelling tluough Japan nine niontlus ago, lost his watch at an hotel, and tlie Japanese police vowed to recover it for mm. I'liey did so after a long cha.se around Dai Nippon, and the story of the pursuit ie quaintly told in the following letter to Mr J. It. Bloomtiuld from the police, who were instructed to forward the watch to New Zealand : —

"I am very happy to announce to you that your lost watch had been found! Yen, it is found and only 10 minutes ago I had mailed it to you through the post. It- is found by police detective named Mr Sogi Miyaguwa. He had been instructed by chief of police here that that watch must be found and returned to the owner, even if it takes yeans to do so. So this Mr Miyagawa began his work, and after buid worniiig ut last lie traced the watch and u tew du-ya Ugo ho actually got it. The watch had been etolen by iiobeman at the Zoological Garden. The man, after (stealing your watch, took very next train to Kobe- and sold to Nagayu man, and this Nagaya man rubbed oil' outside case and sold to another man, and so on it went round all over Japan, aud he tells vu quite romantic stoi"y about it. I hope it will reach you in duo time', and it you givo this police man a few line he ehall be feel honored. — I am, your servant.
