AUCKLAND, this day. A fire was discovered m; the kitchen of the Manakau Hotel on Saturday might," and was speedily . extinguished. The damage was about £30. Subsequently itwas found that a quantity of inflammable wood, straw, and clothing had been banked against the back door, and it is .believed this pile was fired by an .incendiary. ■'.!.. ;' Obituary : Mr J. J. Burgess, aged 80. He entered the colonial' service ay first officer of H.M. brig Victoria, and after that became chief pilot and harbormaster at Auckland.
STRATFORD, this day. An indignation meeting of settlers at Pohukura, Whangamoma, and Tahora was held at Whangamoma on Saturday night. The following resolution was unanimously carried: "That J. McLuggage interview the Premier and Minister for Publio Works re the disgraceful state of the roads and the urgent necessity of the continuation of the Whangamoma railway ; also that the scope of the Commissioner appointed) to enquire into, the land tenure question be widened to include investigation into the condition of roads m the back blocks prior to and also at the time of their investment under the control of the local bodies." His Honor also commented on the unusual length of the calendar at the present session list, comprising 21 charges. William Blasey, aged 35, was caught m the shafting of Garrett's eabinetmaking machinery and badly injured. Benjamin Goodman, a, waif , about 46, ; was found dead a.t Roy's Hill yesterday. He had been suffering for a, long time from heart disease. WELLINGTON, this day. At St. Paul's pro Cathedral on Saturday Miss Blanche Gertrude Mills, second daughter of the Hon. C. 8.. Mills,' Minister of Trade andiCustoms, was married to Vivian Evrard Donald, eldest son of Major Donald Donald, of Landsdown, Masterton. The Cathedral was crowded. After the ceremony a reception was held at the residence of the bride's parents. Over two hundred guests were present, including Mr Seddon, Mrs Seddon, Misses Seddon (2), Sir Joseph Ward, Hods. Hall Jones, T. Y. Duncan, Colonel Pitt, Sir Win. and Lady Russell, Sir William and Lady Steward, and tlve members of both Houses of Parliament. Amongst- a great number of presenta was a solid silver tea service from the Ministry. The inter-island hockey match played at the Athletic Park on Saturday ended m the North beating South by three goals to one. The teams were* very even, but North showed greater goal-getting facility. The game was hard and fast but by no means brilliant. Coe (Wonganui), who showed great dash, scored all three goais for. the North. B'aukwell scored for the. South. The ground was a little on the soft side. There was slight rain at the conHneucemenit, .with a cold southerly wind. There was a 'poor attendance. The annual tournament of the ladies' hockey clubs ■commenced a* Day's Bay on Saturday. The weather conditions were favorable. The PetoneBLenheim game was resultless, and. will be played again to-day. Between three aud four o'clock this morning a fir© broke out m premises m Hardy street, and occupied \>y Ruff ell, fruiterer, situated btween the legal offices of Fell and Atkinson and three new shops recently erected on the western side of the Crown stables by Everett Bros. In a very short time toe fire spread to the new shops, which, were only just ready for occupation, there being unfortunately no brick wall on the west side. A brick wail on -the east side saved the Crown stables and Wilkins Field's Hardware Co, and the firemen's efforts confined the fire to Riuffells' and Everetts' premises, the four places being destroyed. The full list of the insurances is not yet available. The stock was insured for £100 m the South British, and Everett's shops for £500 m the London and Lancashire and £500 m tho Alliance. The loss on Everett's is £600 over insurances, RuffeU's £100 over insurance. Kuffell's building is -also ownedrby Everett Bros, , TIMARU. this day.
