FIRE ON A STEAMER.

' (Received Sept. 12> 9.60 a.m.) MELBOURNE, Sept. 12. j A fire, which quickly assumed alarming proportions, occurred or the steamer Pilbarra last night, being apparently due to spontaneous combustion of a quantity of nitre m the forehold. The flames spread so rapidly that the pantryman, White, who was imprisoned, was only rescued through a hole being cut m. the upper deck just as the flames scorched his back. The fire subsided almost as rapidly as it began. The cargo m No. 1 hold was practically burnt out. The amount of damage is unknown.
