This morning, m the Newtown licensing case, Mr Adams dealt at some length on the point 'raised by the Chief Justice, that a Magistrate had no jurisdiction to void a poll, and supported that view. Mr Atkinson followed on the same side. He laid stress on the point that the absurdities suggested during argument would necessarily apply to the first poll under the Act. BLENHEIM, this day. The Blenheim Retailers' Association have forv arded a resolution strongly protesting against the compulsory Saturday half -holiday. CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Rev. Thomas Tait t of Brunswick, Victoria, has received a unanimous call to St. Paul's Presbyterian Church here, to succeed Dr. Elmslie,. resigned. DUNEDIN, this day. The inquest on the body of Miss Campbell was resumed m the Magistrates Court this morning. Mr A. E. Hanlon appeared for the relative of Osmond, the missing man. One witness testified to seeing deceased meet Osmond on the evening m question. Osmond carried a parceL Deceased had not. a hat on. Dr. Evans testified that when he saw tlie body at 3.30 m the afternoon it must have been dead over 15 hours. He made a post mortem examination with Dr. Martin. There was no sign of a mark or injury. Witness gave evidence as to finding deceased in* a certain condition, and that certain internal parts had been interfered with. He found no trace of poison. In his opinion the cause of death was due to syncope, brought on by some manipulation of the internal parts. There were similar cases where death had been caused by a shock. Another witness gave evidence as to finding a p«i near the body. In the Campbell case the jury brought m a verdict that deceased met her death from shock caused by improper interference, but by whom no evidence to show. Annie Dey Walsh, late licensee of the Aimandale Arms, for selling liquor on Sunday June 21st, was fined 20s and 21s costs. The annual Fanciers' Show opened today. There are numerous exhibits from all parts. In dogs particularly the show is beyond expectations.
