The aricket match against Lord Hawke's eleven was resumed tuis afternoon, when there was again a large attendance of spectators. The Englishmen, with five wickets down for 228, treated the spectators to a very fine exhibition of batting. Bosanquet, the not out man of Saturday, continued his innings, scoring with great rapidity and making over 100 runs m an hour. His hitting was very hard. Thompson also played a sterling game, and his partnership wiitli BosanqueL put on 154 runs. In Hawke's Bay's second innings no stand was made until Macassey and Cotterill got together, the former making 18 not out and Cotterill 34. When stumps were drawn the score stood at 112 for 10 wickets. The scores were: — ENGLISHMEN.— First Innings. NAPIER, last night. The Englishmen gave a splendid exhibition of rapid scoring this afternoon, it was the finest batting ever seen on tlie ground, but was favored, of course, greatfy by the fast wicket. Bosanquet was m great form. Starting at 2 p.m. with his score at 21, he simply wearied out the bowling, lifting ball after ball for four, and he completed 115 runs under the' hour, his downfall being brought about by a good catch by Young away m the outfield, off Trott. He got 42 runs m25 minutes, and scored 16 off one of Trott's overs. His score included 27 fours and nine twos. The Middlesex representative met with a •worm reception as he retired. Thompson also made things veiy lively whilst he was at the wickets, his 67 including eleven fours. When the Englishmen's twelfth wicket fell for a grand total of 461, the biggest score they, have yet made for one innings m the colony, the field was thoroughly played out, and they, were glad to retire. Hawke's Bay started their second innings with the handicap of 355 to wipe off. They began badly, Lusk, Naughton and •Cato going m quick succession. Hawke showed good form for 30, and so did Cotterill for 34, and Macassey 18 (not out). Ten wickets only realised 112, and the remainder of the wickets to fall to-morrow cannot avert a bad one> inning's defeat Bosonquet's slows puzzled ■ the batsmen very much. He has a peculiar delivery, pitcliing his balls high up, and with expert fieldsmen na liberties can be taken with him. Hargreaves is their most successful bowler, his average to-day being five wickets for 31 and from 21 overs. On tlie whole, though, they have not a bowler superior to Trott. The latter, by the way, shaped badly at the wickets, •and gave a very disappointing display. He had three balls from Bosanquet to>duy, the third of which he sent into Latham's hands. The weather was again very hot, and a strong westerly blew all the afternoon, accompanied by occasional clouds of dust-, which swept across the field. Saturday's takings were £71, and to-day £77 was taken. . Conversing with Warner, he stated that the cricket the Englishmen had so far seen m the colony was rather poor, and m every place visited the players had shown a great want of coaching.
