BOWLING TOURNAMENT.

(Per Press Association, j PALMERSTON N., last night. TJie first annual tournament of the i^orfcli Island Bowling Association was commenced on the local greens to-day. The entries, from twenty-six clubs, constituted a record. The weather was fine but windy up to well on m the afternoon, when heavy rain set m and stopped play. During the second round Mr Li^D. Nathan, President of the Association, de- ! clared the tournament open. The Hon. J. Carroll was amongst those present. The following are the results of the first .round : — Wanganui 23 v. Dannevirke 17. Masterton 24 v. Pahiatua 13. Stratford 21 v. Wellington 18. Palmerston 22 v. Ponsonby 18. Victoria 20 v. New Plymouth 19. Newmarket 36 v. Petone 13. Hawera 17 v. Patea 15. Auckland 33 v. Thomdon 19. .Newtown 33 v. Upper Plains 11. Several teams arrived too late to take part m the play. At a large and enthusiastic meeting of bowlers this evening, several important recommendations to the Bowling Association were decided upon. These were that the present system of holding int«rclub tournaments every two years and a biennial tournament m intervening years be continued, and that it was inadvisable to bold alternate tournaments m South ;and North Islands ; the cost of the tournaments to be raised by >i pro rafcu, levy on ;all affiliated clubs, contributing on amount lto be fixed by the Association; that m ifuturo all inter-club tournaments, includiing singles and pairs, be held alternately at Auckland and Wellington, the champion fours lo take place m the smaller centres. (Special to Herald.) Play was stopped at 5 o'clock, torrents of rain falling, making it. quite impossible to continue. Kaiti was playing Wellington and Wlmtttupoko Hustings. In the former match only three heads were played, and m the latter ten, Hastings having the lead. Oisbornc is playing Auckland m the second round. At the ninth head, when play was stopped, the : game stood : Gisborne. 9, Auckland 2. The Gisborne second contingent, who arrived this afternoon, had a good trip ■through.
