HOCKEY.

(By Shinty.)

Kia Kaba A met West End A on the Domain on Thursday afternoon, and after a very hard and exciting game, both' teams left the ground equal to the tune of three goals each, a drawn game being a fit ending to what was undoubtedly a hard and desperate contest. The play of both teams was disappointing, overeagerness to score on the part of individual players spoiling many an almost certain goal being i-egistered. The game- was characterised by an unusual amount of rough, play, and what was even worse a disposition to tiy and override the referee's decisions, both of which faults should be severely dealt with, in the future, in fact, I understand the Association mean to take a firm stand and root out what promises to mar the good fellowship hitherto existing in hockey circles.

The spectators wei-e numerous and evinced theft1 satisfaction by loud and vigorous applause whenever any particularly brilliant piece of play eventuated. Messes Buscke and Doyle acted as referees, Messrs Tanner and Somerville undertaking the duties of line umpires. The matches set down for next Thursday are: Kia Kahu. A v. City A, and City B v. West End B, two good contests should ensue.

The Manawatu Railway Company has now equipped all its rolling stock with Westinghouse brakes. This work has coat the company £15,000.

The New Plymouth Harbor - Board's dredge is now just able to cope with the work required in the harbor, and a new and much more powerful dredge is now a pressing necessity.

Mr Duncan Chief Inspector of Machinery reports to the Marine Depaa-tment that the survey of steamers has been kept up to date," no less-than 279 steamers having been surveyed. "Steamer" surveys now take much longer owing to the increase of the auxiliary machinery, and the appliances for saving fuel and economising perishable, stores. The responsibilities of the chief engineer of a steamer have also increased, both in the cargo and in the passenger lines, through the introduction of these scientific appliances, and it rests largely with him whether or not the ship will turn out a commercial success. . . The steam shipping has increased during the year, eveiy new steamer having an additional improvement for the comfort, of the traveller; some of the late additions to the fleet of the Union Steamship Company being very complete in this x-espect.
