The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, reports having held a clearing sale of live stock, implements, and furniture, on account of Mr E. W. Wells (who has sold his property), on Wednesday, 23rd inst. The day was fine and the attendance very large. As advertised, the sale was absolutely without reserve, and the public showed their appreciation by briskly competing for every line offered. Mr Wells received many congratulations on his successful sale. Below we give details of lines sold :—- Sheep : 560 yarded, and sold at following quotations—4 and 6-tooth ewes, in lamb, 10s; 2-tooth ewes, 7s 9d; aged ewes, 4s; hoggets, 5s ; wethers, 10s. The Lincoln rams, for which no offer was made at auction, were placed privately at a satisfactory figure. Cattle : Dairy cows, in milk and dry, made £4 10s to £6 15s; springing heifers, £7 10s to £9. A well-bred Shorthorn bull made £18 10s. Weaners made from 56s to 725; the latter were good skinned, well-grown young stock. Horses: Twenty useful sorts were offered, many being unbroken light draughts. These brought from £3 to £5 10s for yearlings, £6 to £12 for 2 and 3-year-olds, according to quality. An active light draught filly, broken to lead, sold at £18 10s. The buggy horses made £9 10s, £12, and £17. Buggy "sold j at £20, and set double harness at £7 10s. Pigs : A lot of nine well-finished baconers made 41s—a satisfactory price. Implements, furniture, etc., all sold at fairly satisfactory rates. The weather was particularly favorable, and tempted, no doubt, by the fine day the.! attendance was above the average. Sheep: The yarding was small, and attracted no attention. . Our entry of 400 were all passed. Evidently sheep are not wanted meantime. Cattle; Our entry comprised 213 useful cattle. All found buyers except two. Bidding was very brisk, and prices were firmer. Following are day's quotations of sales made by us. Calves, steers and heifers, 30s to 425; calves, about 9 months old, 53s to 645, the latter price being realised for a line of polled Angus cross cattle; 2-year-old steers, £4 3s to £4 12s 6d. Daily cattle were much in demand. We sold heifers to £7 17s 6d; cows, £5 to £7 15s, according to age and quality. A fairly-bred Shorthorn bull made £8 10s. • Our next sale takes place on Thursday, 21st August, by which time we hope the additions to the cattle yard will be completed. The accommodation will thereby be doubled, and better justice given to this rapidly developing department.
