95 MILES AN HOUR.
GREAT RAILWAY RACE IN AMERICA.
NEW YORK, June 16. One of the greatest railroad races ever entered into in the United States is now being carried out by the Pennsylvania and the. New York Central. Both these companies have inaugurated a twentyhour service between New York and Chicago, a reduction of four hours on previous services. The trains consisted each of six coaches and a locomotive. They started yesterday, and arrived this forenoon, each 4 minutes ahead of time. The distance by the Pennsylvania route is 980 miles, and that of the New York Central is 912, and the average speed per hour was 49 .and 47 miles, respectively. Over the stretch between H&rrisburg and Altoona the Pennslyvania train ran 95 miles an hour, and the Central's rate over the Syracuse and Albany stretches was 80 miles an hour. Tlie locomotives used were the largest ever constructed, weighing nearly 80 tons apiece without the tender.
