P.B. CYCLE CLUB'S SPORTS.

TIPS BY "WHEELMAN." The local cycling riders haye 1 been, and still are, m strict training for the forthcoming cycling sports to be held on the 1 .B.C.C. s grounds on- Thursday afternoon. The entries for the Maiden and Novice events are records, being considerably larger than at last year's meet. This is as it should be/showing that the bc»y\in Gisborne are waking up a bit to their position, considering they have one of the best tracks, m the colony, which should entitle them to a chance of holding a N.Z. championship meeting at no distant date. On the form shown by the different riders m the Maiden it will be a close and very exciting go. There will be no waiting. The scratch man will have to put every pound m to get on even terms Yt «r limit men for the race nome - If Warren shows anything like last year's form he will be very handy at the finish. The general opinion is that Arthur Kirk will be over the line- first, barring accidents, but from what I hear about Morris it seems to me that they will all have to kick out to wear him down. However, being an unknown quantity, I will place 1 Kirk, Warren, and Morris as named. In the Novice another big field. faces the starter. Arthur Kirk is ou the scratch m tliis heat. lam very sorry, but I must leave him there. Young Murtagh is stated to be a regular flyer, and certainly from the pace he showed m a sprint the other evening, must be close up. Wilkinson shows grand promise of beiug a first-class cyclist, but the low-gear machine he rides, m my opinion, will debar him from being mat the finish. W. Robertson shows, splendid form and rides with vim. Parker" Crone, on scratch, seems to be" too far away, and his task is too big. Jack Ferris, from his turn of pace when training, has lost two races, the Maiden and this, through not training enough. As it is, he will also have "started." Witty, had he got m more riding with the better men, would have had a show. However, a season will vastly improve him, and I hope to see his name figuring m the prize list at the 1 end of the year W. Rowland is fast, no doubt, but will lose any chance of winning' by that bad habit of looking around. I would notbe surprised if the stewards did not exercise their authority, for m most of the accidents that occur m cycling it is thought the above cause is responsible. Take friendly warning, boys! At the finish I expect to see them placed thus: Murtagh or W. Robertson first or second, Roland close up. The next event on the programme is the Half-mile Dash. This will be, from a spectator's point of view, very exciting, as the two back men, Kirk (scratch) and Crone (10yds), will have to do some phenomenal pdalling to get on their limit njens trail. I will place the 1 two Kirks and Crone fdr this heat, m the second heat P. Crone, Warren, and J. Blakely, and for the final C. Kirk, C. Crone, and A. Kirk as named. For the- Half r mile Championship I tip Kirk, Crone, and Kirk as named. The final eVent is the Three Mile Race, Although the limit man has nearly 400 yds start, still the scratch men, Kirk and Crone, should have no difficulty m closing the gap, as they are fairly good judges of pace. I will weigh them m: C. Kirk, C. Crone, A. Kirk. • It is said this will be a Kirk benefit meeting. That is nasty, for Kirk Bros, are most unassuming- and sterling riders, and I prophecy their wins will be very popular. All that is needed for a successful meeting is a fine day.
