OUR DUNEOIN SPECIAL.
(Special to Herald.) DUNEDIN, this day. The first prosecution under the Opium Prohibition Act of last session took place at Port Chalmers yesterday, when William Dyer was charged" with importing two 101 b tins of opium on the 16tti inst. The defendant pleaded guilty, and Mr PLatts, his counsel, asked for a mitigation of the penalty of £100. This was approved of by the. Collector of Customs, but their Worships (Messrs. Mill and Moneon), after consultation, decided to inflict the full penalty of £100 and costs. The recent betting raids have been fol.lowed up by a batch of fifty informationsbeing laid against Peter Grant, of the well-known firm of Barnett and Grant, bookmakers, charging him with breaches of the Gaming Act. The cases are 'to come before the Magistrate on Friday. Several well-known sports, . whose names appeared m the defendant's books, with others, to invest on the New Zealand Cup and other races, have been summoned as witnesses. rf
