(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, last night. Returned troopers of the Fourth and Fifth Contingents paid a last tribute of respect to Gunner Arthur W. Kendall (formerly of Hokianga), of the Fifth Contingent, who died on the troopship Tagus last week. The embalmed remains were taken to the railway station and thence to Onehunga, and shipped on for Hokianga, where the burial will take place. About 30 troopers escorted the remains to the railway station, marching on either side- of the hearse. They were followed by a large number of boys of St. Stephen's Maori School. AUCKLAND, this day. Alex. McKenzie, a single man, was crushed to death between two logs at Whamanaki. A verdict of accidental death was returned at the inquest. The Native, Wiremu Pura, has been sentenced ,to ten years' imprisonment for having carnal knowledge with a girl under 12 years of age. FEILDING, this day. Cliarks Roe, senior, an old colonist, died at his residence, Feilding, last night. Deceased arrived in Wellington by the ship Adelaide in 1940. He was one of Wellington's earliest journalists, having been part proprietor of the defunct Advertiser for a time. He came to Feilding m 1874, and has resided here since. WELLINGTON, this day. A Conference of the New Zealand Seamen's Union will be opened in Wellington to-morrow. James Collins, of the Rimutaka, was fined £5 at the Magistrate's Court fox failing to contrive to destroy rabbits eta his property. The annual meeting of the New Zealand Amateur Rowing Association to be held in Wellington on August 31st will be more than usually important. The Canterbury Club and' Christohurch Amaiteur Club will propose that the Association's headquarters be removed from Wellington to Christchruch, and that a provisional committee be set up in the latter city to manage the affairs until their appointment is revoked. Otago, Queen's Drive, and Waitemata Clubs will move for the appointment of local associations, with powers of local government.
