NEW SOUTH WALES LANCERS ARRIVE.
A MOST ENTHUSIASTIC RECEPTION. THEY HAVE BEEN SENT NORTHWARDS. SEVERAL LADS DETAINED. (Received Nov. 7, 9.40 a.m.) Capetown, Nov. 6. Th« New South Wales Lancers from London have arrived by the steamer Nineveh. Viecount Belgrade, on behalf of Sir Alfred Milner, conveyed his welcome to them. , The Mayor and Corporation went on board the steamer, and expressed to the troops the thanks of the city for the Lancers' willingness to share in the honor of maintaining the authority and dignity of the Empire. Captain Cox, replying, said the Lancers might be trusted to go wherever ordered. As soldiers and bushmen they believed they would be able to hold their own. The streets were decorated and crammed with cheering orowds. The Lancers marched direct to the railway station, where they were entrained for an unknown destination northwards. The warmth of the demonstration was almost frenzied. One account states that several Lancers who were under age were greatly disgusted because they were detained and ordered to return to Australia, their parents objecting to their going on active service.
