Sir Joseph Abbott, interviewed on his return from New Zealand, said the people of New Zealand were becoming alive to the necessity of considering their position in view of the near approach of Federation of the Australian colonies, as they recognised it must affect their trade. He was much impressed with the growing trade and wonderful prosperity of New Zealand, and the energy of the people. During the whole period of his visit he never saw a beggar, and he did not believe there were any in the colony.
