Among the arrivals by the s.s. Rimutaka yesterday was Captain Coyle, late of the Royal Engineers, who takes charge of the submarine defences throughout the colony. He has had 30 years experience in the Royal Engineers, and was in command latterly of extensive submarine defences at Dundee, Captain Coyle will be stationed here and Captain Falconer, who lias hitherto been in charge of the Department, will be placed at the head of the Auckland torpedo station. Tl)o Agent-General wires : Butter 98s, market firm ; cheese 455, market falling. AUCKLAND, To-day. The R.M.S. Moana brought 432 bags of mails for New Zealand and 920 tons of cargo, the largest ever brought hero by the mail boats. She had 77 passengers booked for Sydney. The steamer left at 10 p.m. for that port. The Mahinapua sailed for south with the 'Frisco mail yesterday afternoon. Last night a whare at Carroll's camp, Lucas Creek, occupied by agumdigger Darned Thos. Remington, was found to be on fire. The building was completely enveloped in flames by the time the outbreak was discovered by Robert Moller, another gumdigger. As Remington was inside Moller and some others burst open the whare door, and the unfortunate occupant was found lying dead upon the floor slightly burned. The Auckland Presbytery sat in Committee at St. Andrew's Church from 8.30 last night until four o'clock this morning. The congregation worshippingatSt. Andrew's Church have never agreed over the longstanding trouble as to a call to a minister. A petition from certain members of the church was put before the Presbytery last night with a view to that body settling all differences. The result was that 20 witnesses gave evidence as to the proceedings at the calls given. It is understood that the evidence taken is to be placed before the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand which sits here in February next, and that that body is to be asked to decide as to whether a previous call was conducted in a proper and regular manner. The police now believe that the reported drowning of the boy Morris at Northcote is a hoax. Samuel Adams, charged with arson at Paeroa, was dismissed on an alibi proved by his wife and two friends who spent the early part of the evening in his house. The track to the top of Rangiloto was formally opened yesterday. The ferry steamers took down a number of passengers, and about half an hour's climb took the people to the top of the mountain, in a crater of which speeches were made by several of the leading citizens.

PALMERSTON NORTH, To-day. The entries for the Manawatu A. and P. Association's show now to hand exceed those of lost year by 350, exclusive of implements and minor competitions. The principal headings so far are : — Horses 280 entries (350 animals), cattle 17G (225 head), sheep 401 (961 head), pigs 551, produce 126. DUNEDIN, To-day. After five days debate the Presbyterian Synod has agreed to the basis of union with the Northern church as amended, and has also agreed to the pi-oposed Bill. The City Council resolved to levy a special rate of 3d in the £ for the present year to keep the overdraft within legal limit, and to impose an extra rate of 6d next year, making a total municipal rate of Js 9d, to bring the revenue up to the expenditure.
