THE LUCKNOW STRIKE ENDED. ENGINEERS' STRUGGLE ALSO ALMOST AT AN END. THE UNION ADMITS DEFEAT. London, Oct. 30. Mr Ritchie, President of the Board of Trade, is preparing an amended statement of the. points which lie considers should bo referred to the conference between the masters and engineers. He will probably suggest that the employers should modify their demand for unconditional withdrawal of claims in regard to the hours of work, and advises a simultaneous withdrawal of the lock-out and strike notices. I Oct. 31.— Mr Barnes, Secretary of the Union, says the engineers are defeated. They will rely upon legal enactment. A strike in the cotton traile is imminent. Recently the federated master cotton spinners granted the operatives a fortnight , to consider a proposed reduction of 5 per cent, in wages. The operatives Association have now decided to reject the reduction. Sydney, Nov. 1. The Lueknow strike has ended. On Saturday the manager notified a number of strikers that unless they returned to work that day their places would be filled. An interview followed, and the manager informed them that on condition the strike was immediately declared oil', and there was no further interference with the company's employes, he would undertake to revert to the standard rate of wages on May Ist, 1898. In the meantime he would pay at the rate of 7s (id a shift. A general meeting of miners subsequently decided to accept the terms, and declare the strike off. A number of strikers have already resumed work. An effort will bo made to obtain similar terms from the management of the Darck Wentworth, another Lueknow mine where the strike exists.
