THE AOTEA'S FIRE.
Auckland, last night.
At the official enquiry into the recent fire on the schooner Aotea at Tokomaru Bay, held in the Magistrate's Court to-day, none of the members of the schooner's crew examined could assign any cause for tho fire.
Mr Rood, who appeared for Captain Skinner, suggested that the rats on board might have carried off portions of cotton waste saturated with oil, etc., and have made nests, and spontaneous combustion might thus have taken place. He submitted that every care had been taken by the officers, and that no negligence had been proved.
Mr Rose, Collector of Customs, said no direct, charge was made against the master. Tho enquiry was held if possible to disclose the scene of the fire.
Mr Brabant stated the Court would give its decision to-morrow morning. To-day. — The Court of Nautical Enquiry into the recent fire on the auxiliary screw schooner Aotea gave its decision this morning. The Court stated that it could not ascertain the cause of the fire. It considered Captain Skinner and crew not guilty of any negligence. The captain's certificate was returned.
