[Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, To-day. The City Council has prepared a bye-law compelling cyclists to carry a bell and lamp and confine the speed to tea miles per hour. Th6y will probably require them to register and have a number conspicuously panned on their machine. A warrant has been issued for the arrest of a young man who left for Sydney a fortnight ago, on a charge of stealing £40 worth of goods and issuing a valueless cheque for £7. Henry Lawson, the Australian poet, intends taking up his residence in New Zealand, which he says he prefers to all the other colonies. Sharpe, the well-known jockey, died suddenly on Saturday night. The cause is believed to be heart disease. Bosher'a fate will be determined by the Executive on Wednesday. Cabinet spent yesterday afternoon in reading through th c depositions. AUCKLAND, Today. Over GOO declarations have been filed with l he clerk of the Magistrate's Court, Auckland, under the Registration of Old Peoples' Claims Act, 1896, passed by Parliament to obtain material to form the basis of an old uge pension scheme. At Kawakawa the Natives took a body from private ground at Kaikohe away to Waitomaio for bone -scraping purposes, according to an old Maori custom. It had only been buried six months. Tawhaia Puatiata, owner of the ground, and the stepson to the woman whose body was exhumed, prosecuted. As the case was proceeding he wanted to withdraw the charge. This was granted on condition that the Colonial Secretary would agree, an that the expenses (£7 4a) were paid. After consulting defendants Puatiata said they would not pay, and as the latter declined also to pay the case proceeded, resultting in each defendant being fined 409, which, together with the coata, came to £15 4a. The public school at Lucas Creek has been burned down. The origin of the fire is unknown. The naval depot in the large wooden shed near the North Shore wharf was burned down at 4 o'clock on Sunday morning It had been transferred to the Devonport Borough Council, who intended making it a borough gymnasium. The crew of H.M.S. Royalist, in the Calliope dock, turned out to render assistance. The shed was insured for £100. Incendiarism is suspected. The fire broke out in a little office. The building had been locked up. ' A stabbing affray on board the steamer Mamari occurred at midnight on Saturday. A man stabbed John Moreton, the lamp trimmer, and Robert Wedell, an A.8., has been arrested on a charged of wounding with intent to do bodily harm. Morton remains en the ship with a deep wound four incheß long on the face. A fire at Karaugahauo destroyed Adams Bros.' store and bakery, including £1500 worth of stock. The origin is a mystery. Hickton's premises adjoining were gutted. Barrett, the owner, wus insured for £200. Adftirm's stock was insured in the Phoenix and North German offices. The injuries of Morton, the sailor of the Mamari, who was stabbed on Saturday night, are serious. The wound is two inches long, and extends from the corner of the mouth to the windpipe. There is no immediate danger to life. Weddell states that he acted in self-defence. OAMARU, To-day. There are 18 entries for the championship draughts tournament from Invercargill, Manaia, Wanganui, Oamaru, Temuka, and Wellington. Post entries will probably bring the number to 25. FEILDING To-day. Peter Lassen, aged 18, of; Bunnyihorpe, waß driving two horses this morning up the bank of the Oroua river when the dray upset. Lasaen's neck was broken, and he was kjllor' instantly. NAPIER, To-day. John Fitzgerald and William Wilson, who stand committed to trial on a charge of murdering James Mclntosh, were this morning arraigned on a charge of robbery with violence. As the evidence was exactly similar to that in the murder csbo the charge was temporarily withdrawn, the Crown Proßeoutor intimating that he would prefer an indictment against the accused in the Supreme Court for robbery with violence in addition to that of murder.
