The Board of Health has aseed the Government to convene a conference to take effective measures to prevent the introduction of tho bubonic plague. SIDNEY, Dec. 23. Mr Reid states that there is no objection to New South Wales being represented at the conference proposed by Mr Seddon. Though the Government believes in free trade, they are desirous of promoting reciprocity as much as possible. It is impossible, however, that the colony can be represented unless the conference is held in Australia. Dho. 24.— The Sydney Morning Herald regards Mr Chamberlain's proposal, which Mr Seddon wishes discussed at his Conference, as visionary, although by reason of its characteristics it is not altogether an inappropriate subject for discussion by a semi-festive assemblage of statesman. The fleet will remain in Hobart till 27th January. Naval manoeuvres similar to those in Norfolk Bay last year will be carried out at Akaroa this time. The Orlando goes direct from Hobart to Wellington. BRISBANE, Dbc. 24. The early retirement of the Premier, Sir Thos. Nelson, is regarded as probable. He has stated that he is tired of the laborious work of office. HOBART, Deo. 24. Insects are causing great havoc in the hop gardens.
