The Strike at Reefton.
Wellington, today. In connection with the miners' strike at Reeftou, Mr Ziman, the managing director, informs the Post that while the wagea on the West Count havo hitherto been 103 a day work has been uncertain and intermittent. Ho has so fur paid the current rate, but his London board has cabled an intimation that it expects that the current rate of wages in Auckland province, which is 48s per week, be paid, pioviding only that the rate now paid is 20 per cent in excess of that wage. Aa the company looks forward to having in its employment in the near future some thousand m«n, this margin of difference ia a large consideration. Mr Zitnan poinra out that the work would be regular and certain, lasting, he hopes and ►xpecis, a lifetime. Further, he says that on his own responsibility ho is disposed to fix the rate at 50s and insure the life of each workman at his own charge for £500. The concession ho proposes without prejudice, hoping that a settlement may be arrived at without any industrial Btrife, which, while he is desirous to avoid, he is quite prepared to face if the i demands of the men prove unreasonable, I
