DEATH OF STANBURY.
THE WORLD'S CHAMPION SCULLER.
DROWNED IN THE THAMES.
London, June 8. JimStanbury, the Australian sculler, was drowned while out practising on the Thames to-day. Stanbury was in training for a raoe for the world's championship and £500 aside against " Wag " Harding. ■ '.
Stanbury, wlitrwaa a young NBW South . Welshman, held the proud position of being the world's champion sculler, having wrested that honor from J. McLean in 1891. The : following year he beat Sullivan. '• Stanbury left Sydney for England on March 31at lasb • to carry out an agreement to row Charles (or " Wag ") Harding, the champion of England, for the world's title and £500 aside. The retce was fixed for July 13th, and two deposits of £100 had already been paid. Stanbury had a lot of Australian backers, and was expected to give just asj^ good an account for Australia as did Beach; f and Searle before him.
