COLLIDES WITH ICEBERGS. {
NARROW ESCAPE FROM FOUNDER- ■" ;-i- ING. y Adelaide, Aug. 13. The steamer Port Chalmers, 2677 tons from London to Sydney, has arrived here in a battered, condition. -The bowsprit, cutwater, and figurehead are. gone, and the bow plating smashed for ten feet from the waterline upwards, and the bow ; stove in. On 27th July, after rounding the Cape she. came into collision with an immense iceberg. Hundreds of tons of ice fell on the starboard side) and the ship was almost capsized. Her bows were stove in, the stem smashed, and as she was making water fast, the situation became critical. . The boats were swung out ready to aban--1 don the vessel, but by keeping the pumps going contimiously, "and patching up the holes, she managed to keep afloat, She afterwards met with tempestuous weather. Altogether those on board had a most distressing experience. The steamer was only saved by the collision bulkheads remaining intact. She has & large general cargo, including a big consignment of dynamite, which it is believed is not seriously damaged,
