WELLINGTON, To-day.
The purchase of the Mangapapa block on the Waitotara river is being completed. There are only a few more Natives' signatures to be obtained, and it is believed the block will be available for settlement within a month. .
The death is announced of Mr Alexander McCarthy, who is well kuow in Parliamentary circles as the special attendaut of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, at the age of eighty years. The Government steamer Stella has been leased for twelve months, with a purchasing clause, by Mr J. Fleming, Engineer, Auckland. She leaves for Auckland at the beginning of next week.
CHRISTCHURCH, To-day,
At a meeting of delegates from the Canterbury rowing clubs, called to consideracircular from Mr Biss relating to eight-oared rowing, it was resolved by four votes to three that the introduction of eight-oared rowing into New Zealand at the present time is altogether impracticable and premature, and that the proposal could not be supported in any form as far as Canterbury is concerned.
