ATTEMPT TO ROB A BANK
(From Oub Own Correspondent.) Paxevirke, to-day. An attempt was nude to rob the Bank of New South Wales last night by a man wearing a mask, who attempted to smother the clerk. The latter escaped and gave an alarm, bat the offender, however, made good his escape. [Press Association] There was a sensational attempt at burglary m the Bank of New Soath Wales bat night. Mr Dowues, teller, left the bank at 8 and retained at 10 o'clock, and on entering the bedroom at the back of the building he heard someone moving m the roetn. A masked man rushed on him and attempted to smother him m a blanket. Downes evaded the man, ran into the street, and gave the alarm. The police and others soon arrived, bat the man had decamped, leaving behind a dark lantern, ft mask, ft heavy bludgeon, bat, and empty bag. Mr Hogg, manager of the bank, sleeps at the hotel, and left hisy room for a brief space of time. This moray ing it was found that m his absence bis ro<pm had bean entered, and the keys taken fr/bm his pocket. There is no clue yet. '
