Insurance Companies' Protest
Wklukotoic, today. At a meeting of representatives of Fire and Marine Insurance offices it was resolved to forward a statement to tbe Colonial Treasurer that his proposals relative to foreign offices depositing £20,000 are objected to by the local (New Zealand) office*. The Council of the Chamber of Commerce carried a resolution to tbe effect that tbe enforced deposit of a large sum of money se security by fire and marine companies, will not be conducive to the interest of the public, inasmuch as it may le*d to tbe withdrawal from the colony of companies of undoubted stability, and by reducing the number of insurance companies may lead to an inordinate iocrease in the rates piyible for insurance.
