THE GAMING SALOON.

« WARM REMARKS PROM THE BENCH. Wellington, to-day. Sixteen frequenters of Burkes gaining saloon were fined £5 or a month's imprisonment. The Magistrate said he had no doubt that each of the defendants who had given evidence m Burkes case had committed deliberate perjury, and had concocted the story before they went into the witness box. The stigma m the present case would atick to them all their lives, and if ever any one of them came before him to give evidence m a civil or criminal case, he would not believe a word they uttered. In fact, he would not hang a dog on their evidence. The Magistrate refused the request of the defendant's counsel for a month m which to pay the fine, but would allow one week.
