THE BREAKWATER.

The breakwater has suffered considerably during the last feW days. Prior to the late boisterous weather it was noticed that a semi-circular crack bad made its appearance on the seaward side, about "two chains from the end. Several large blocks were protruding, and serious oonsequonces were feared. 'An examination this morning shows that the crack above mentioned has increased, and now a semi-circular portion, about 30 feet m length and narrowing on either side from 12 feet at the centre to the edge, has parted several inches from the main body of masonry. The sea has evidently undermined this portion, and it is imperative the Harbor Board should take steps to prevent its falling bodily into the breakers. Perhaps the best plan that could be adopted would be to utilise some of tho huge concrete blocks for the purpose. If these were laid on the outside of that portion that is slipping away they would form a protection to the rest of the structure. Unless some- | thing is done at once it will not be at all surprising if a hole is made right through the breakwater by the action of the waves.
