FOOTBALL.
WAIPIRO V. GISBORNE
The above clubs mot for the first time on Saturday afternoon. There was a large attendance, considering the state of the leather. The game was a slow one, excepting for several very good dribbling rushes the forward division of the Waipiro team got under way. The visitors were a sturdy-looking lot, and with a bit more practice would have about won. Their full-back was a gem, taking the greasy ball well, and not making a single mistake. The forwards all did their work well, especially Hewitson (2). Giaborne, owing to the absence of several men, were not so strong as usual. Both the Murphys played good games, also Fisher, Robinson, Cole, McDonnell, and Abraham. Waipiro won the toga and look the wind. From the very fir«t the ball hovered in the centre of the field, until Waipiro managed to force the blue and blacks. To this the Gisborne boys replied by Abraham scoring a try, but no goal resulted. For anothor five minutes the ball was in its old place in mid-field, and here Waipiro had hard luck, only managing to again force Gisborne. Cole very soon got the leather, and by a swift run managed to reach the red and black's territory. Again the try for an increase failed, and the score was now four to nil. There being only a few minutes to go before time, Waipiro made a great attempt to score, and this time with a good result, Williama cleverly getting in. The attempt at goal failed, and time was called with Gisborne two points to the good. The second spell was started by Gisborne forcing their visitors. The latter's blood was now up, and for a short time things were warm, R. Hewitson showing finelorm, for which he was rewarded by a score. The necessary three points could not be added, and the scores were now equal. Things were hot now, and Waipiro were in great straits once or twice, but a free kick from a Gisbornito relieved them for a time, but ultimately they were forced. It was at this juncture that some of the best play of the day took place, and after a bit of neat passing between Cole, Fisher, and J. Murphy, the latter scored. He took the kick himself, placing a neat goal. Time was now called, leaving Gisborne victors by 9 points to 4. Mr Day acted as referee, and Messrs Trotter and P. Hewitson as line umpires. In the evening the visitors were tendered a smoke concert, and at 9.30 they left for home by the s-s- Moa. HAWKES BAY F. WELLINGTON. WixincGToy, to-day. The match between Wellington and Hawkea Bay came off on Saturday afternoon at Petone. It rained just before the start, and only a few hundred people were present. The ground was slippery, but not sodden. The Hawke's Bay team were known to be weak, bat the forwards did very well for the first spell and held their own. Wellington in that time scored twice, and Baumber kicked a goal from one of the tries. Hawke's Bay secured a number of free kicks, principally through MacKenzie's off-side play, and had several shots at goals, but none took effect. Towards the end the visitors fell to pieces. Two more tries were scored and Baumber was allowed to pot a goal, though he might have been easily stopped. The game ended in Wellington scoring 15 to 7i il. Had the ground been dry they would ! probably have scored more, as the ball was several times taken across the line. The visiting forwards were very good, but the banks were somewhat weak. Gorman, full-back, played with coolness and judgment, and saved several almost certain scores. The Hawke's Bay men left for South on Saturday night, and play Timaru on Wednesday.
