The Retiring President.

HIS MESSAGE TO CONGRESS. Washington', Dec. 6. — President Harrison in his letter to Congress declares that the prosperity of the country is unprecedented. Wages were never so high, which he claims is due to protection. The differences with Germany and England regarding Samoa had been adjusted, and also th« Behring Sea dispute. The message reiterates the belief that Congress will have to face the question of free coinage. If Canadian opposition continues it will be necessary for the United States to secure outlets to the seaboard independent of the Canadian railways and the St. Lawrence, and if necessary combat Canada by means of competition in the Pacific and China mail service.

The Gisborne V.M.C.A. hold a gospel meeting in Holy Trinity schoolroom at 7.30 this evening. A welcome is extended to all men.
