« [By Telegraph. — Puess Association.] WELLINGTON, Today. At the annual meeting of the Shipmasters' Association, the report showed the society to be in a healthy financial condition. Mr W. H. Levin was re elected President, and Captains H. Johnston and Wills, vice-Presidents, and Capt. Strang secretary. The latter was presented with an address and gold watch on the occasion of his marriage. Capt. Campbell, of the Kiwi, suggested that representation should be made to Government with regard to life boats. He asserted that life boats used by vessels trading in Australian waters were unsuitable, inasmuch as there was too much top hamper about them. He instanced when tho Gambier foundered, near Melbourne, some time ago. one of the life boats was so much weighted above water that she turned over three times. The fact showed that some alteration on the present system of building boats was required. The poll in connection with the proposal to raise a special loan of L 165,000 in order to carry out the drainage proposals of the City Council, resulted as follows:— For the loan 2353 votes, against it 666 votes ; majority for loan 1680 votes. The total number of votes on the roll was 5822. The lonic left the Cape for Wellington via. Hobart on Saturday morning. Six or seven slips occurred in the Gorge yesterday and some on the coach road as well, so that traffic has been completely blocked to-day, but it is expected to be resumed to-morrow as none of the slips are large, unless more rain falls. Tho Napior train was caught between two slips, but is in a safe place, nnd the passengers had to wait some hours till a train was sent from Danevirke, which took them back to Woodville. A Native woman hanged herself at Motoa pah, in the Foxton district, last night. In the case of Welch v. Bransarove, the former,, who quarrelled with defendant and was badly beaten, sued him for LOO, a criminal information having failed. The R.M. said defendant had exercised great forbearance and dismissed the case, costs LlO. In one shape or another the case has been hanging about the courts for nearly three months. AUCKLAND, Today. Ac a meeting of creditors in the bankruptcy estate of Alfred Jewitt, merchant, to-day an offer of five shillings in the £ as a composition was accepted. The liabilities were close on £4000. CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. The Athletic Association has decided to hold the next championship meeting in Wellington. WOODVILLE, To-day. The case of Davenport v. Syms has been further adjourned on the application of defendant to Thursday. Owing to the magistrate being unable to attend. Messrs Burnett and Carlyle were the presiding justices.
